Locate Object displays a Magic Map of strength 2, which means it shows only the areas you've explored, but also shows monsters, items, and projectiles in real time. This map is equivalent to the Cleric's high-level Devine spell, but costs ten less mana (40 vs 50) and has ten less skill mod penalty (-25 vs -35), so you can rely on it earlier in the game.
